ACM Hosts MLK Day of Service on Jan. 17, Features DEIJ Training Sessions

MLK Day of Service Offers DEIJ Trainings, Presentations, Service Project 

CUMBERLAND, Md. (Jan. 9, 2024)—Allegany College of Maryland will host a Martin Luther King, Jr. Week celebration of diversity and service on Wednesday, January 17, in partnership with NAACP Allegany County Branch 7007.

The event is open to everyone, and registration is available.

 The MLK Day of Service includes the following:  

  • Two Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice training sessions led by Tony Michael, J.D., and Denis Scott, Ph.D., of the WVU Extension. The first is offered at 9:30 a.m. and the second begins at 1:30 p.m. The hour-long sessions include interactive discussions of voting rights, voter education, internal biases and stereotypes. Sessions will be held in the Thomas Welcome Center. 
  • A celebration of NAACP’s local and statewide initiatives will be presented. Leaders of the NAACP Branch 7007 will lead this session from 12-1 p.m., in the Zimmer Theatre in College Center. Participants may attend in person or select to attend virtually when they register.
  • A volunteer activity to help individuals access community resources. Individuals will create information packages for distribution to local residents. Packages will be assembled in the Haines Student Lounge in College Center.  
  • Music and refreshments provided in College Center.

Allegany College of Maryland’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice Committee members and NAACP Allegany County Branch 7007 leadership encourage students from ACM, Allegany County Public Schools and Frostburg State University to attend.
