Allegany College of Maryland is a member of Campus Compact's Democracy Commitment Initiative for Community Colleges. This national initiative focuses on the development of civic learning and democratic engagement among America's community college students. The Democracy Commitment began in the spring of 2011. Allegany College of Maryland's President, Dr. Cynthia Bambara, attended the launch of The Democracy Commitment at The New York Times in November 2011 making ACM one of the first 100 community colleges nationwide to be a part of this movement.
The Democracy Commitment provides a national platform for the development and expansion of programs and projects which look to engage community college students in civic learning and democratic practice. The goal of the initiative is to see that every graduate of an American community college receives an education in democracy.
At ACM, the Democracy Commitment Committee (composed of faculty, staff, students, and administrators) facilitate the goal of the project through the College to Community Partnership Center.
