CUMBERLAND, Md. — Nov. 15, 2024 —Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) is recruiting restaurant and hospitality professionals and employers for its new Hospitality Management Registered Apprenticeship program. The College is a registered apprenticeship sponsor for the Maryland Hospitality Management Apprenticeship Program through the Maryland Department of Labor

It’s a program that builds talent and retains employees.
ACM is one of six Maryland community colleges to sponsor Maryland Hospitality Management Apprenticeship Programs. The College’s 36-month “earn and learn” program focuses on the culinary arts within the restaurant and hospitality industry.

  • The program is open to cafes, restaurants, resorts, pubs and breweries, and dietary and food operations in healthcare and education settings who are interested preparing their employees for supervisory or management-level careers.
  • Its initial apprenticeship business partners include UPMC Western Maryland and D’Atri Restaurant.

Each registered apprentice gains paid on-the-job learning and personalized classroom training towards an Associate of Applied Science degree in Culinary Arts. Apprentices work with the College’s apprenticeship coordinator, Courtney Love, to apply for admission, federal and state financial aid, and ACM scholarships. Students in need may apply for student emergency grant funds to buy their required books and supplies.

Love helps employers plan sustainable career paths for their apprentices and take advantage of Maryland grants and incentive programs. As apprenticeship business partners, employers receive three types of State incentives, like the Maryland Apprenticeship Tax Credit, the Sponsor Apprentice Incentive Reimbursement (SAIR), and Maryland Business Works grants.

  • Employers are eligible to receive a maximum of $15,000 in Maryland Apprenticeship Tax Credits
  • Sponsor Apprentice Incentive Reimbursement of $2,500 per apprentice.
  • Three years of a maximum of $40,000 in Maryland Business Works grants.

Pennsylvania and West Virginia employers may take part.
The Maryland State Department of Labor has granted ACM permission to allow non-Maryland-based employers to take part in the College’s Hospitality Management Registered Apprenticeship program. Out-of-state employers are not eligible for Maryland’s incentives and tax credit programs, although apprentices may qualify for federal and state aid or ACM scholarships.
