CUMBERLAND, Md. — December 11, 2024 — Allegany College of Maryland is proud to announce that its hospitality management degree program was accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Program in Hospitality Administration (ACPHA) this summer. The ACPHA is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
Program accreditation ensures standards, accountability, and credibility. This is
the first time that ACM has sought accreditation for its associate degree in hospitality
management - area of concentration in hotel and restaurant management program. ACM
is among a growing list of ACPHA-accredited degree-granting programs in the U.S. and
overseas.
“Being an accredited program holds our program and our instructors to higher standards.
It benefits our students by adding value to their degree,” said Debra Swope, the program
director of the ACM School of Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts.
The program at ACM
The program’s curriculum prepares students for careers in hospitality and recreation businesses, including
hotels, restaurants, resorts, and other businesses that provide lodging, recreation,
or food service. As part of the curriculum, hospitality management students gain hands-on
experience through required internships and on-site practicum. Many hospitality management
students work as front of house staff at ACM’s student-run Culinaire Café in tandem
with culinary arts students to provide lunch service during the fall and spring semesters.
At present, a quarter of the college’s culinary arts majors are also enrolled in the
hospitality management program.
This is the second program within the School of Hospitality Management and Culinary
Arts to earn accreditation. ACM’s culinary arts degree program was accredited in 2023.
