Name: Randy McGann Major: General Studies Class: 2008 Current Position: IBM Microservice Architect
Q & A
Why did you choose your major? I chose General Studies at ACM to help me transition from military service to the
collegiate goals I planned to achieve. This allowed me to create a strong foundation
before pursuing a focused major.
What advice would you give to students interested in your career path? The field of computer science has been rapidly changing and adapting from its inception.
Be open to change and learning new ideas. However, not every idea is a winner. Be
comfortable with failing fast, learning from your mistakes, and persevering towards
your goals.
What was your overall experience at ACM? ACM was the best community and culture I could have asked for as I transitioned from
military to civilian/collegiate life. I was embraced as a non-traditional student
and was given opportunities to excel in my studies as I built my educational foundation.
What is your greatest achievement in your career? My current employer, IBM, has entrusted me as a member of the hiring council for our
local delivery center. This great responsibility has allowed me to gain a great perspective
on shaping careers for early professionals and creating an impact on the local IBM
culture.
