Q & A
  • Why did you choose your major?
One of the reasons the Human Service major was appealing to me was its versatility due to its provision of a comprehensive education that equips learners with skills relevant to multiple career fields and prepares us to make a positive impact on the community.  I am particularly appreciative of the program's emphasis on ethical and effective communication, the awareness of current profession-related policies and laws, multicultural competency, as well as its advocacy for the population served.  These skills were highlighted throughout my education journey in the Human Service program and have significantly helped me now in serving the students I work with.
  • What advice would you give to students interested in your career path?
I always see my work as an academic advisor as a helping profession as it involves assisting students in achieving their academic goals and navigating the complexities of higher education.  So, honing interpersonal skills, especially communication skills to effectively listen to and communicate with students is essential.  Also, having a sound knowledge base of the institution, degree requirements, policies, procedures, and staying up to date on trends and changes in higher education will help provide informed guidance to students.  Lastly, being able to set boundaries is vital.  I've learned that setting boundaries helps ensure the provision of focused and effective support for students and maintains professional relationships with them.
  • What was your overall experience at ACM?
It was a valuable experience that helped me grow both academically and personally.

  • Who was your favorite ACM faculty/staff member, and why?
This is a difficult question as I have had many favorites/role models among ACM's faculty and staff.
  • Annette Clark, whose wisdom and grace as a helping professional is something I strive for.
  • Melody Gaschler, whose mentorship and friendship I value and who listened, believed in me, and gave me many opportunities to grow as a student leader.
  • Pathways for Success staff, whose steadfast support for first-generation college students has helped me in many ways.”
  • What is your greatest achievement in your career?
Successfully completing my graduate degree and landing a job where I can positively impact students' lives.
  • Additional Comments:
The first time I stepped foot on ACM's campus, I was filled with worry and doubt about whether I could make it to the end.  As a first-generation, non-traditional, non-native speaker student, I felt like I was at a disadvantage.  However, it didn't take long to prove myself wrong.  The campus had amazing resources and support for students, helping me thrive and flourish.  Also, the faculty and staff were always willing to help.  I always tell people that ACM will always hold a special place in my heart.
